Kenyan police kills seven colleagues in a 9-hour siege at a police station

Kenya’s National Police Service on Thursday morning reported of an incident of rampant shooting in a police station in north-western Kapenguria town.

What was earlier ascribed to a terrorist attack on the station turned out to be a disgruntled policeman who shot and killed seven of his colleagues because his superiors had turned down his request to leave the police service.

The Star news portal gave details of the killed policemen as a recce squad officer, an Officer Commanding Station and five police officers were killed by their colleague at Kapenguria Police Station on Thursday.

The seven were killed in a nine-hour siege at the station that started at around 5.30am. It took reinforcement of officers from the capital Nairobi to neutralize the shooter who is reported to have been killed.

Further details on the aggrieved gunman, identified him as Police constable Abdihakim Maslah, was attached to the station but had been serving at an outpost.

Maslah who hailed from Garissa County graduated from the Kiganjo police training college in 2013.

The police further disclosed that Al Shabaab militants attacked a camp in Lamu County in the early hours of Thursday morning but their attack was repulsed.

A statement issued by the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, added that “several terrorists (were) believed to have died or escaped with severe injuries.’‘

“In the ensuing pursuit, exercise, a body has been found with an AK 47 rifle and other terrorist paraphernalia,” it added.
